IIW organizes 1st National Skill Competition on Best Welders (Woman) in Chennai

India is ranked 121st out of 131 countries in female workforce participation and it is therefore widely believed that if gender parity in workforce is achieved, India can increase its GDP by 16 per cent which in turn can go a long way to boost the stagnating economy.
Today, women in India are striving for equal participation in every sphere of industrial activity and Welding is no exception.  To encourage the Women to make their career in Welding, The Indian Institute of Welding (IIW) had organized the ‘Best Welder’ competition exclusively for women at the National Level, for the first time, on 12th October 2018, at Kemppi India premises, Chennai.
The event was supported by M/s Kemppi India Pvt. Ltd., Chennai – a 100% owned subsidiary of leading Finnish company manufacturing Digitally Controlled Welding Equipment and M/S Nextgen Plasma Pvt. Ltd., Kolkata – manufacturers & integrators of automated welding and cutting systems.
Many dignitaries were present during the event, to make the day even more historical and memorable in the lives of all women who had put all their heart to prove themselves and add on pride to their lives. Dr. Arun Kumar Bhaduri, Distinguished Scientist & Director, IGCAR, and President of IIW-India inaugurated the occasion through lighting of the lamp. Dr. Shaju K. Albert, Vice President, IIW-India; Shri Rashmi Ranjan Mohapatra, Managing Director, Kemppi India Pvt. Ltd.; Shri Devasis Paul, Director, Nextgen Plasma Pvt. Ltd.; Shri Somenath Ghosh, Assistant Director, Skill Development Programme, IIW-India; Shri T.V. Prabhu, Chairman, IIW-India Chennai Branch and Shri Rituraj Bose, Chairman, National Skill Competition – Best Welder, IIW-India; were also present among other dignitaries.
Significant number of contestants from various sectors who are engaged in manufacturing through welding had participated in categories like: Shielded Metal Arc Welding, Gas Metal Arc Welding & Gas Tungsten Arc Welding.
