What made you choose welding as a career? How much of total experience do you have?

 The versatility of welding and it’s application on various vessels, columns etc made me choose my career in welding and I’m having experience of 6 years in this field.

Since you hold a vast experience in the welding segment, what is your say on the current welding market scenario? Is it on par with the international markets?

Welding nowadays is crucially used on large scale. However, companies are using different welding process for better quality and large production. Market is taking welding as crucial part of job which uplift it’s importance.

What according to you is required to boost the welding industry in India?

Yes, welding needs to be upgraded in Indian market with meeting international standards to improve quality and safety of job.

What are your expectations from the government for the upliftment of the welding segment?

I believe government needs to bring course in colleges as like mechanical and computer science. As we all know, welding courses are majorly available in South Indian colleges only due to which there is somehow lack on importance of welding in Indian market

What type of projects have you worked upon?

I am basically indulged in oil & gas, petrochemical and refinery projects which includes dual feed craker unit, sulfur recovery unit, RODM, ETP A and tankages project.

Could you brief us on your recent project? What is it all about and your role into the same?

Currently I am engaged in Guru Gobind Singh Polymer Addition Project which is in HMEL, Bathinda.

I’m indulged in DFCU- Dual feed cracker unit as Welding/NDT Engineer

Some keys features about it:

  • It is world’s largest dual feed cracker (Gas+liquid)
  • low pressure ethane recovery from RFG
  • three types radiant coil types from different types of feeds
  • low pressure chilling train
  • use of binary refrigeration ( Methane+ethylene), besides propylene
  • world’s largest CGC and PRC machines
  • multi feed de- ethaniser

Tell me about the most challenging inspection project that you have been involved with during the past year.

I would like to tell about my job when I was engaged in turn around project last January, where I was doing inspection of Inconel and duplex steel.

Talk about your field responsibilities in your current organization?

In my current organization, I’m working as a welding/NDT Engineer (PMC), I am look after EPC companies like L&T, Technimont, OIL and B and R, in which I have to look after the inspection job from intimal stage to final commissioning.

What checks and balances do you use to make sure that you don’t make mistakes?

I work as per our codes and standards to avoid any discrepancies.

 What is your say on safety at work?

As we use to say” Safety first”, safety always comes first in every job.

What new inspection specialty skills have you developed during the past year?

From past years, I learned about double wall storage tanks for storage of ethylene and propylene.

 How do you conduct a visual inspection of a weld? What are the limitations of testing?

I do inspection on weld joints and welding as per specifications l, codes and standards. Initially by checking Fitup, followed by visual inspection as per codes to avoid and defects.

Can you brief us more on the International and National Codes & Standards?

In our job, we use international codes and standards like ASME, API, DIN, SSPC which helps in construction of job with safety and quality.

Have you contributed to any cost savings for your company? Elaborate if any.

Yes, there is an instance where we have to weld 66 inch Stainless steel 304L pipe for that we need to give purging  and for purging very large amount of gas need to be used so I approach my organization to use non- purging filler to avoid any extra cost.

Describe your understanding of welding quality control systems.

Quality weld and it’s usage in jobs is getting improved on daily basis. Companies and organisations are giving importance to quality weld and this system is getting strong.

Where do you see yourself ten years from now?

I see myself on a very good position with vast knowledge of Welding and having experience in handling big projects with quality and safety.
